Ottawa, ON – Mary Honeywell Elementary School is one of 37 OCDSB locations outfitted with solar panels as part of a partnership with solar power company Potentia Solar Inc. The projects have contracts to supply power to the Ontario electricity grid under the province’s Feed-In Tariff (FIT) and microFIT programs.
Since, the project began in 2011 net revenues have exceeded $648,000 dollars and over the 20-year contract should generate almost 7 million dollars in savings with the capacity to offset 44,000 metric tonnes of CO2.
“Our goal is to design and build cost-effective, long term solar roof projects in Ontario,” says Chris Asimakis, president & COO of Potentia Solar Inc. “We are proud to partner with the OCDSB in providing solar generation capacity for years to come while realizing this goal.”
Chair of the Board, Shirley Seward says, “This project is valuable on many fronts including energy conservation, environmental stewardship and educating today’s youth about alternate energy sources." Solar panels are able to harness the energy from the sun and convert it to electricity and will be a major energy source in our students’ future, she added.
Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli will meet with students, Trustees, staff and community members on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 1:50 pm in the school’s gymnasium (the school is located at 54 Kennevale Drive, Nepean) to discuss the OCDSB’s achievements in energy conservation and renewable energy.
“By 2025, Ontario expects to have 20,000 MW of renewable energy online, representing about half of the province’s installed capacity,” says Minister Chiarelli. “The renewable energy leadership of Mary Honeywell Elementary School and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board are bringing us closer to our goal.”
