A bill that would have allowed Parliamentarians to opt out of swearing an Oath of Allegiance to King Charles was killed by a group of cross-partisan MPs. Dating back to the 1867 Constitution, MPs and Senators must affirm their oath to ‘bear true allegiance’ to the British Monarch before taking their seats after an election. They can’t sit in office if they refuse to do so. Should people who hold office swear this oath in 2024? We open the debate floor in Hour 1.
