My view of many aspects of today's life comes from postings outside Canada as a Foreign Service Family, for much of the past 50 years.

Paul Well's excellent overview of the WHO and its invaluable contribution to world health, is solid, and should be required reading. It is honest, unbiased and thorough (https://www.macleans.ca/news/world/the-doomed-30-year-battle-to-stop-a-p...).

Canada was intimately present in the late 80s, as the UN created the Global Programme to Combat HIV/AIDS, in the pursuit of public health for everyone. I leave the last words to Paul Wells:

"...people who spend their days studying the threat kept writing reports for political leaders. But a plan for deep cooperation among competitive jurisdictions against an unfamiliar infectious agent is of no use if it gets stuck in a filing cabinet. It’s like sending a Steinway piano and a book of Beethoven piano sonatas to the government every few years. If nobody studies and practices, that piano is never going to sound like Beethoven.

The extraordinary mixture of prejudice, misinformation, deliberate obfuscation and smoke-and-mirrors all stop us from getting a clear picture of both the pandemic and what to do about it. Here is a well constructed work of solid facts, from which to move forward.

I can only commend, in the highest possible manner, this excellent piece of research and appraisal by Canadian journalist, Paul Wells. It was published earlier this week in Macleans Magazine, and should be required reading for anyone looking for a true picture with political colouring.
