Backstory: I wrote this to commemorate two fallen Canadian peacekeepers and protectors, slain on our own soil by two Canadian sympathizers of a foreign and deluded faction of vigilantes. It shocked our nation. October 25, 2014. (Image Canadian Press)

Cowardly assailant with a car

Emulating villains from afar

Succeeded in killing with violent intent

Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

What a day, what a week!

News so shocking, one cannot speak,

From carefree coffee to dramatic strife.

Gunman took a soldier's life.

Nathan Cirillo stood in place

With welcoming and pleasant face

Now fallen, his cortege gently goes

Along our Highway of Heroes.
