Residents and Businesses in Ottawa have a hydro problem; the cost of electricity in Ontario has doubled since 2002 and is going up another 42% over the next 5 years. This is an impossible situation and the next Mayor of Ottawa needs to aggressively address this issue. Here’s my 4-part plan to address the soaring cost of electricity.

1.  We need to immediately stop the practice of sending the 10’s of millions of dollars in annual Hydro Ottawa profits to City Hall. Hydro Ottawa profits should be used to off-set the cost of Hydro for the residents and businesses of Ottawa. This will result in a noticeable reduction in your Hydro Bill.

2.  We need to investigate High-Efficiency Incineration for Ottawa for two reasons. First, it would save us the 100’s of millions in costs to open another landfill when the Trail Road landfill reaches capacity. Second: using a high-efficiency incinerator to process Ottawa’s residential waste would produce substantial electricity for Hydro Ottawa, 25,000 homes worth in fact, using that locally generated electricity would further offset the extremely expensive electricity that we buy from Hydro Ontario. That’s enough to produce another reduction in your Hydro bill.

3.  The next Mayor of Ottawa needs to work with the province and Hydro One to ensure that ALL residences and businesses in Ottawa are served by Hydro Ottawa. We’re all in this together and the roughly 40,000 Hydro One customers who live within the boundaries of Ottawa need to benefit from any efficiencies we can achieve.

4.  Lastly and most importantly, we need to work with the Ontario Provincial government to do whatever it takes to allow the City of Ottawa, through our hydro utility, Hydro Ottawa, the ability to purchase our electricity from Quebec at roughly half the price we’re paying today. This is the single most important short-term objective for the next Mayor of Ottawa. It is inconceivable that residents and businesses in Ottawa will be able to sustain the present cost of Hydro and the idea that the province is going to raise the price of electricity another 42% over the next five years will make hydro simply impossible to afford for most residents and businesses.

If this approach sounds good to you, please consider supporting me on Oct. 27th.

While you’re at it, if you’re a Hydro Ottawa customer, why not ask the Mayor or your Councillor why they chose to not use the massive Hydro Ottawa profits to lower your electricity bill.
